[78-L] L & H music

It wasn't until late 1930 that Roach started using musc consistently in shorts, and SONS OF THE DESERT (1933) had none except in the opening, the nightclub, and the cinema sequences. The SONS OF THE DESERT DVD has newly recorded music where there was none in the original (probably at director William Seiter's instructions); I find it jarring, which is why I hang on to my old VHS copy. Mixing audio sources is like the full orchestrations Victor added to Caruso recordings in the 1930s; you're trying to make a suit from old and new cloth, and it will never match. Much as I admire the Beau Hunks and other groups, I prefer the original soundtracks on the Roach comedies to adding new hi-fi stuff underneath. I don't even like the mix of new audio sources Roach did themselves in their later-1930s reissues; Shield's later music is stylistically against his earlier work, and uses bigger groups recorded with ribbon mikes as opposed to the original dialogue recorded with condensers. It sounds awkward (as in BLOTTO). PC

I know it's been a while since these original postings but a thought
occurred. I'm under the impression that most of the shorts currently
available have NEWLY recorded "higher fidelity"music tracks playing under
the dialogue as opposed to what might have been there to begin with. Did
all the L&H material originally have music beds?

Thoughts anyone??

Martin

Of course, who "appeared" and who was heard are not necessarily the same
thing.
