I suspect they didn't pay much for doing liner notes. They may not have paid 
much for that particular compilation either, if it was originally on the 
Fanfare/ProArte label. Incidentally, some of my earliest CDs in that series are 
still turning up in horrible looking issues, from a guy in southern Ontario who 
had distribution rights for about a year and kept bootlegging them and farming 
them out to dollar stores. It was never worth anyone's while to chase after the 
guy.
