My Otari MX5000s will play staggered-head tapes... but I have to be in a padded room for three hours after playing.

The only 2 track stereo tapes I've ever played (on a quarter track deck with the
balance control turned somewhat to one side so that the tracks balance out) were
inline tapes. I'm not sure where the 2 heads would have to be for a staggared
tape to play properly. Even though I've seen a few staggered tapes on Ebay the
inline tapes are more plentiful when they show up.

You're only set straight if it's an in-line head tape... I have yet to see a
good repro from a staggered-head stereo release (without MASSIVE doinking with
the head spacing...). The phase-shifting from those will well and truly give one
Staggered Head Syndrome, which displays itself by the listener wandering
aimlessly about the room, dizzily bumping into objects trying to find the true
center of the recording. Rumour has it that the East German Stasi used those,
along with off-center recordings of Ken Griffin, to interrogate captured
espionage agents from the West.....
