Tony Russell's perspective:
"One of the most frequently cited statistics in country music
history is that Patsy Montana was the first female singer to
make a record that sold a million. The record was "I Wanna
Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart," and seventy years later it is as
much a part of musical mythology of the Old West as Gene
Autrey's "Back in the Saddle Again" or the Sons of the Pioneers'
"Tumbling Tumbleweeds." In fact there is no hard evidence that
it did reach the magic total, and the scrupulous historian
should probably conclude that it did not. Let's just say
that "Sweetheart" was a very big hit and leave it at that."
