[78-L] Sonny Greer - Matrix with a W

Thanks Ron - but wouldn't this still be a reprocessing as the other copy has
the same matrix number without the W?? So the Western Electric affect would
have been added to only some pressings. If it was recorded twice, wouldn't
we have 2 different matrix numbers?
Also, was this difference only on the Vocalion issues, or did the American
Columbia and foreign pressings also issue a non-Western Electric version??
Julian's copy is a foreign pressing and has the Western Electric symbol as
well.
Anyhow, it's an interesting mystery.

I believe the W refers to the Western Electric electric recording process,
so the bass should be much better.

which one I was keeping. The new one seemed to be in lesser condition, but
the bass seemed to leap out of the grooves (and the bass on this record is
great!) and had more depth in the overall sound then my older E copy. When I
looked at the matrix number, they were the same, but the issue with fuller
sound has a circled W before the number? Was this an EQ reprocessed record?

A Train where the record was reprocessed to remove the bass to help with the
stripping issues. But the Sonny Greer seems to have gone the other way where
they reprocessed to expand the bass?? Is this true? Also, which version did
the original Columbia use?

My copy on English Columbia DB 5033 has the Circle W brand. Loads of
bass! Incidentally, the composer credit for "Beggars Blues" is Bigard &
Hodge, which is Hodges's original name I believe.
