[78-L] the 'deadest' consumer audio formats?

I remember seeing a NY Times article from the 50s about a bootleg rock and
roll record ring being busted in Russia. They were using old X-ray plates.
Does anyone know more about this? Are any of these 'records' on the
collectors' market?
