I've seen a picture of the early G&T typewriter.
They made the type of typewriter not with individual letter typing
arms but with one revolving drum with all the letters on it which
would spin to the correct position to type.

--------------
The G&T Typewriter (somewhat Index-style) was invented by Frank Lambert,
the builder of the lead-sleeve phonograph with the world's oldest
sound-track, by analog methods. The audio is available on the Internet, with the
hours of the day (for a talking clock). He is buried in Green-wood Cemetery in a
solid copper casket and his life and career were covered in an old article
in APM.

He came to the US in 1876 (from France).
