With a plastic film ribbon where characters are struck only once in one
space it may be possible to recover a long string of words, I would think.

And has anyone ever really managed to print out an author's last magnum opus

stretching out the ribbon? This was a plot device in a Columbo episode in

70s and more recently in House. Not possible, I say.
