[78-L] Victor Herbert plays Mendelssohn..Mendelssohn loses

There _are_ decent band recordings of "Spring Song" and other of the _Lieder ohne Worte_, though they seem unlikely pieces to transcribe for band. The best ones are British, as the Guards bands had really fine woodwind sections and they approach the pieces like the chamber works they are. There are also other strange Mendelssohn band transcriptions on record, like the first movement of the Third Symphony ("Scotch") by Prince's Band on Columbia and the Rondo Capriccioso op. 14 by Vessella's Italian Band on Victor. (Both of those are pretty good, the Vessella a bit more polished than Prince, but they both have some style and committment.) PC

No, there's no "angel" on the label (something else Zon-O-Phone could have been
sued for), the title was at an ANGLE to the brand name.
