Al - for my money Roy sounded best in a cup mute ("The Gasser" where he starts w that cup sound, even late in his career like the Mary Lou Williams LP, the track "Sunday") - when he played quietly one can hear all of his positive traits trumpeter, one can hear his superb sense of swing. beautiful open tone - on "Where The Lazy River Goes By" and "Wabash Stomp" w his band in 19367 one can hear some of the best trumpet on record - but with a band like JATP - yikes, like Jacquet on sax, a great jazzman who liked to screech a lot - I prefer Page or Newton for that reason
