I wouldn't be surprised if the packaging changed over the years. I've
got two copies of one of the later ethnic series albums and one copy is
in a box and the other in a heavy jacket with internal divider like was
used for a single LP and booklet.
I just got the CD of the Harry Smith American folk anthology and they
describe the packaging as "six LPs in three hinged two-record
sets--contraptions (soon replaced by boxes) that suggest less a likely
mechanism for delivery of recorded music than a cryptic homage to a
lapsed patent that, dating from some time before the First World War,
understandably failed to catch on."
I'm wondering if this might have been an attached pair of three-fold
like Victor used for the exercise set among other things, and later was
used by Decca for things like The Boys From Syracuse. With your four
record set, maybe it was a four pocket foldout, but later a box.
