The volume control is not really shutters or a board with a hole in it
either.  Rather, it is a pear shaped rubber plug with fluted sides that
moves in and out of a rubber sleeve all contained within the throat of the
horn where it connects to the base of the tone arm.

It's a Vocalion -- note the little knob next to the grille: that's their
version of "remote control", an extendable cable that allows you to shut the
volume shutters from a nearby easy chair.
