Music, movie, book-of-the-month clubs go bankrupt and close: reports

TORONTO - Published reports say the long-running book-of-the-month club 
Doubleday Canada and DVD and CD mail-order service Columbia House Canada have 
gone under.

Reports indicate that Doubleday Canada and Columbia House Canada, known as DB 
Media Distribution, Inc., shut down after declaring bankruptcy this week.

DB Media had been in business in Canada for more than 70 years and had been one 
of the largest direct marketers in the country.

Its music and DVD arm, Columbia House Canada, and book arm, Doubleday Canada, 
offered members heavily discounted products if they signed up for a subscription.

DB Media was part of the N.Y.-based Direct Brands, Inc., whose brands include 
bookscene.ca, healthharmony.ca, and CHCanada.com.

Requests for comment from DB Media and Direct Brands were not be immediately 
returned.

Random House Canada, which runs the similarly named Doubleday Canada Publishing 
Group, distanced itself from the news, saying there was no connection its 
operations.
