[78-L] microphone technology

We did it, I'm afraid, rather roughly by trial, error, and ear. (I have perfect pitch, so it helps a bit, and Bob's ears are tremendously well-honed) We timed between pitch rises and falls, marked them on the score, and adjusted (with a digital readout on the turntable) on the fly, rather like holding down the "accel" function on a cruise control. They weren't huge pitch variations in general, so we managed pretty well, I thought, but it was trying -- I remember about four on one side and three on the other. The B side opening was the worst sounding, but oddly enough the easiest to fix as it was the repeated staccato A major chords at the start of the development -- there's lots of space between them, so we could single each out for adjustment. This was over ten years ago; I daresay we could work out something much better now. The performance is wonderful, though, easily the best of the Capitol recordings. PC

So how did you fix such a continuously variable speed inconsistency?
