[78-L] Jack Palmer

I had not heard this either. I will miss Jack's presence at the ARSC conferences. I'm glad I got to know him well. We had lots of conversations about Dalhart through the years. Most collectors laugh and look down their nose at Dalhart, but Jack recognized that he was a giant in an industry that had only just begun when he got started. Dalhart was the first person to recognize hillbilly music as worth exploiting, even before Ralph Peer, Jimmie Rodgers, Ernest Stoneman, and the Carter Family. He approached his craft seriously and documented many of the historical events of his era through his countless recordings. Jack's lovingly written biography of Dalhart graces my bookshelves. I was honored to get Jack to autograph my copy for me. Every music pioneer needs a champion like Jack Palmer. Dalhart was lucky to have had him as his number one fan.

> Did I miss a posting somewhere? I JUST heard that our good friend Jack Palmer (Mr. Vernon Dalhart) died just before Halloween! There will be a short tribute to him in the December "In The Groove" but this was shocking news to me! Jack contributed so much to our hobby and was the nicest guy to chat with at ARSC Conferences - where he gave his Dalhart paper. (SAdly it was before the Conference programs were put up on the ARSC website for us all to hear.).
