[78-L] ARC numbers, was Re: Walter Winchell

The Y-MM-## series started Nov 35 (5-11-01/51), but was preceded by the
YYMM## & YY-MM-## series, which lasted 2 months.
These earlier issues are numbered 3509##, 35-09-## (later pressings) & 35-10-##.
They were issued in a single series each month, thus not with race/country issues
starting at YY-MM-51.
So the nrs in Ty's ODP (350901 etc) are partially incorrect.

Not everything was released on all ARC labels.
I have seen no Romeos before 5-11-## (and thus not with YY09## nrs without the dashes).
Rust-JR6 gives only an "ARC" issue; for ex. Chick Bullock ARC 35-10-02 (recd 6 July 35).
Also only ARC in the Blues and Country dgs, but Tony Russell lists the nrs without the dashes
(see for ex. Hoosier Hot Shots ARC 350914, which also exists as 35-09-14 on Perfect).

A dance band example is ARC 350920 EDDIE PAUL & Paramount Orch.
I have label images of Melotone 350920 (pres. first issue) & Mt/Per 35-09-20 (pres. reprints).
Possibly also both versions exist on Oriole (but not seen). Almost certainly never on Romeo.

Has this been researched somewhere?

No, they didn't -- but that number series (more accurately, Y-MM-##
starting November 1935) went on into 1938 before Melotone, Perfect
and the remaining dime-store labels were dropped, leaving Brunswick,
Columbia and Vocalion to soldier on with their own catalog numbers
(and Columbia barely a shell of its former prominence). The highest
US Melotone number in the "Abrams files" is 8-05-01.

Take care,
Joe
