I think the explanation is simple.
During the year or two that Gerald Clark and his orchestra - with singers Duke of Iron, Sir Lancelot, and Macbeth - were resident at the Village Vanguard, and remember they rescued the club from going under (again, Max Gordon didn't cover this in his book), Winchell wrote several favorable reviews about Clark's group in his column. Likely Clark's group reciprocated by making a calypso about Winchell, singing it in the club and recording for Varsity it and other calypsos performed at the Vanguard. For some reason, I don't think J. Edgar Hoover frequented the club, although perhaps the FBI has a file, but they still made the calypso "G-Man Hoover". (Varsity 8188) "Maria", which is on the other side of Varsity 8130, is also a fine song. ("Maria, you make me 'shame'. Don't you call me Papa again.")
I don't think the Varsitys were ever marketed or sold outside the United States./steve
