Darren,
You are correct. The transition from VHS to DVD was relatively quick. Price
points were good for the new format, there was no format war (I have friends
who bought HD DVD and were obviously not happy when the format was
abandoned) and the extras (commentary, extra scenes) made DVDs very
desirable. Of course, those of us who had laserdisc collections considered
DVD extras old news, but one couldn't argue with the quality of the image
and sound. VHS cassettes can now be had for 50 cents to $1.00 at thrift
stores (we've picked up a bunch of Barney's and Wiggles for our two-year
old; he was given a TV that plays VHS.)
Where DVDs really took off were for releases of TV series. Such releases on
VHS were poor sellers, primarily because you had to fast-forward or rewind
to find a specific episode, a real pain. With a DVD, you just hit a button.
I knew people who sold their entire laserdisc collections once DVDs
appeared, gambling that the DVD releases would duplicate the laserdisc
versions exactly. That was shortsided as it turned out.
