Decca had an early 10-inch LP series called "Souvenir Album" featuring recordings by Red Foley, the Mills Brothers, and others.
After Hank Williams died in 1953, they issued "The Hank Williams Memorial Album" on LP. These are only two examples of many that occurred in the early years of the Lp.
"Album" was routinely used by record companies in the '50s and '60s when there were no cooresponding sets that included 78s. It has always been an accepted, if incorrect, term by the industry.
