Gentlemen & ladies,

A large number of commonly used chemicals are flammable &/or volatile & have a potential to damage property, life & the environment when used & disposed of incorrectly. In the US & I would have thought in the EU as well, products containing such chemicals usually carry clearly stated warnings concerning safe handling, exposure & to a lesser extent, unfortunately, proper disposal.

We commonly use such materials to refinish furniture, repair & clean mechanical equipment & in a variety of cleaning applications including the removal of adhesives. With respect to the latter, Goo Gone & similar products used to remove adhesives, have been mentioned on this list for years & without the comments now being offered. Goo Gone & it's equivalents, like so many products in common use, is a potentially hazardous material, that can be safely applied when used as directed. This cannot be said for Benzine which is clearly a solvent that should never be used by the general public.

Benzine is a known human carcinogen & there is no reason for the general public to be exposed to this solvent.

In all cases, it is generally recommended that chemicals be tested to insure that their application will not damage the materials they are being applied to.

Toluene, while not classified as a human carcinogen, should be handled with care & proper ventilation. Commonly available solvents such as acetone, mineral spirits, & paint thinners are all more volatile than toluene & the same care in handling & exposure applies to them as well.

Regards,

Duane Goldman
