Goo Gone or Goof Off sound like similar commercial products for inanimate
surfaces.

there is "adhesive tape remover pads" manufactured by triad disposables,
inc. it is for medical use, such as when iv tubes are taped to a patient's
arm to stay in place. when the medical tube is removed, these pads are used
to ease the discomfort of peeling tape off the skin by dissolving the
adhesive substance on the sticky side of the tape. you could check with
pharmacies or surgical supply outlets for availability.

i use these for removing labels from glass bottles in the kitchen in order
to re-use the bottles for other things. according to the box, the
ingredients in this product are: mineral oil, fragrance, PEG-98 lanolin. i
have no idea if this substance would have any negative effect on record
labels or on shellac. to use, it is necessary to get the solvent underneath
the tape so as to come in contact with the adhesive side of the tape being
removed. therefore, you must first peel up a small corner of the tape to
expose the underside, and then work from there applying the solvent by
rubbing / blotting it on with the pads.

i suspect that this might be a usable method of removing the dreaded "SOL"
which sometimes are found on record labels. once again, though, i have no
idea if this solvent would damage record labels.
