To me, they seem to do a bit better. The surface-noise sound doesn't  
seem to be much different at the slower speed, and when the recording  
is sped up to normal, the surface noise gets shifted up as well,  
getting much of it out of the way of the music. The more worn a  
record is, though, the less help you get from the process.

The important part of slow-speed transfer is doing so with FLAT  
equalization.
