[78-L] Pre Dog Questions

I just happened to read about the Monarch label the other day in "The Paper Dog" by Michael Sherman and was reminded about the matrix numbers.  The matrix number you mention is actually the catalog number.  It wasn't until April 1903 that there was an actual matrix number that was different than the catalog number.  This was because they had finally perfected the method of making a "mother" that was capable of creating multiple stampers.  So they needed a numbering system for the permanent masters.  The matrix number was born.  This changeover appears to have occurred at the same time they went to the sunken label.  I found this interesting so wanted to pass along.

Cheers,
Glenn

This discography shows that the original master was recorded in Sept. of 1901.

That's a fairly late number in the 300 series, which was Victor's earliest
10" record series.I'm pretty sure that the performer on yours. Frank Seiden,
made a lot of other Victor records around the same time period. He was a
magician as well as a singer/comic. These early pre-dogs as well as the
early dog Victors do not have the "sunken" labels that all Victors have from
1903 on. These labels are flush, so you can see all the information that was
on the original master.
