I guess he's talking about Berliner - who died in 1929.
Berliner was, in deed, the first to manufacture and sell flat records, 
but didn't Edison, at one point, "invent" the flat disc as well, before 
deciding to go for the cylinder?
Not forgetting the first Léon Scott de Martainville efforts on glass 
plate...(Has anyone ever seen a picture of that device? I can only find 
images of his barrel model on the net.)
