Dear Mike,
Thank you for passing that information along. It's good to know, because
it's highly counter-intuitive, or at least it runs counter to my intuition.
I should mention, however, that my intention in this case was merely to
arrive at a complete digital copy of this particular track for personal,
non-critical listening. Playing it in reverse and then reversing that
digitally allowed me to reclaim the portion of the song that was missed
because of the skip. I was then able to splice this section
transparently into the first, unreversed transfer.
As I say, thanks for smartening me up here, and I will certainly never
use this technique except for in such "forensic" situations as the
above. Many times my wife will pull out one of her old LPs and ask me to
transfer it for in-car listening, and she doesn't know from square waves!
