Take any Italian or Spanish tenor from the early 1900's and arias like 
"E lucevan e stelle". Miguel Fleta practically tears his heart out at
"E non ho amato mai tanto la vita!"...! (See the vesion on "Prima Voce

If that's not sobbing, there never was any sobbing.
