Western "pop"tunes are, in general, limited to a small number of chords/
chord progressions which are virtually all already defined. Since the notes
of the melody line (or "tune") of a new "pop tune" generally uses one of
the standard chord patterns, the songwriter(s) is/are extremely limited
as far as the possibilities; this is why "pop tunes" often sound very much
alike...?!
In my own case, I am further limited; I work within the confines of
"12 bar" blues...!
