[78-L] Jazz Man Re: Whither NOLA

I'm one of the lucky ones who got to buy one of the few copies Cary was
able to bring of his book, and I've had just a little while to leaf thru
it and it is great! It is interesting that for much of its history a
store called The Jazz MAN was owned and run by a woman -- and one that
was young and attractive. That factor must have brought in a few more
customers. I sense a bit of domonitrix in the relationship she might
have had with some of her geeky male customers since she was the
gatekeeper to the records they could not get to unless she brought the
record to the front room. Since most of us only remember self-service
stores, we don't realize that most record stores pre WW II were not self
service. She kept up the tadition longer, and having a wall hiding the
stacks made it more adventurous. This explains the attitude I saw in a
couple of collectors shops in NYC and Chicago in the 60s where it was
still hands-off and no brousing -- you HAD to know what you were looking
for at the outset of your entering the store. It seemed strange to me
since I know much of this is the luck-of-the-find, and finding things in
stacks and bins you didn't know about or would not have guessed to ask
for.

Martin,
Actually, the Jazz Man presentation was two years ago at Stanford. Were
you on the fence about it that long? (8-)
I know you meant my talk on The Record Changer magazine, so I appreciate
it. The Jazz Man book is available at Lulu.com. I'm finishing up the
accompanying CD and will advise everyone when it's ready. The CD is
going to go in the back of the book, where there already is a contents
page. You'll be able to get it at originjazz.com or directly from me.
