I taught music appreciation in elementary school for a couple of years and on the first day of class, I brought in as many different formats as possible: a cylinder, a single-sided 78, double-sided 78, 16" transcription disc (which got a lot of gasps), a 10" LP, 12" LP, 45 single, 45 EP, tape cartridge cassette, reel-to-reel, 4-track, 8-track, quad, cassette, mini-disc, CD - etc. Everyone was fascinated and confused about what the differences were, what machines played these, why they didn't survive, etc. It's a matter of exposure. They all thought these weird formats were amazing and wanted to hear music played on 78s rather than CDs when I was giving a lesson. It's now some 5 years since I taught that class, but some of the kids who I taught are now in high school and still remember me and those items that I brought in.

> When my daughter, (now in her mid twenties), was in grade 8, the teacher asked the class if anyone knew what an LP was. She was the only one who raised her hand and then told the teacher that she, in fact, knew what a 78 was. Well the teacher didn't know what a 78 was and she had to explain it to him and the class. Another teacher who runs a restaurant in the summer in Parry Sound, ON, told me that his kids were asking him about these old records that rotate really fast, I explained them to him and gave him a couple to show the class. He had never seen them before.

> So everybody on the list is right - the young people of today don't know what a 78 is and they are also very interested when they hear one.

> End of argument!, (Yeah right!)
