The Birka Jazz Archives is a fascinating display of jazz album cover
art, as is the Jim Flora website. Not every one is going to agree on
what is attractive and interesting as cover art, even among the David
Stone Martin covers. Some of the cover art displayed on the site did
not originate as cover art but as an illustration published in a
48-page, 6-3/4x6-7/8-inch self-cover undated Asch-Disc catalog. At a
guess, it was published about 1946. The following year, Disc went
bankrupt. One illustration that became a cover are the terpsichoreans
on Count Basie Dance Session (both one and two), Some covers Martin
covers were used on both 78 and LP-album versions. Of the “crap” jazz
covers, the only one I have is the Vanguard Ted Brown “Free Wheelin‘,”’
which says nothing about Ted Brown or the music, and might as well have
been printed on a milk carton.
