The show dealt with the impending End Of The World, including a brief history of civilization. "The First Television Program" showed a few seconds of Elman (playing a gavotte by Popper or Gossec, I forget), probably from a Vitaphone short. It was followed by a balop reading "Stay Tuned For 80 Years Of Crap".

Just so you'll have some backup on this: yeah, I saw it too. Couldn't identify the tune off the top of my head, but it was unmistakably Elman. I got a good laugh out of the "80 Years of Crap" line. Guess we'll have to wait for this season to come out on DVD to hear (on the commentary track) why they chose that particular clip, or where it came from--though as you say, it almost certainly was a Vitaphone.
