"Oh,Monah" was originally on Crown 3304 as Joel Shaw with vocal by Dick Robertson. The date of 3/7/32 is probably from Victor's blue card file and likely reflects the date RCA got the work order from Crown. It was re-released on Varsity 8033, Robertson was still making records for Decca so his mane was the more marketable.

Back in the early sixties I was given a Varsity 78 of "Oh,Monah" by Dick Robertson and his Orchestra.Iheard the same recording several years ago on an LP by a group associated with the bandleader Gene K-ardos.I believe the recordings dated from sometime in the thirties. Can you tell me anything about the Var-sity recording?I had read-or heard-that a former RCA Victor recording chief named Eli Oberstein startedup Varsity Records around 1939.I've got a CD of Georgie Auld and what was the Artie Shaw 1938- 39band on the label plus one Varsity I came across the other day by a big band led by Frankie Trumbauaer.W.C.Handy also cut some sides for Varsity. The Auld sides date from early 1940 and I believe the Trum-bauer sides date from around the same time.I've heard the Trumbauer sides at the RHJ website but whenI was listening to them, the sound kept cutting in and out and it wasn't due necessarily due to buffing.________________________________From: Steven C. Although hedidn't collect vocal discs, he DID collect dance band stuff (his goalwas every record listed in ADBD...!) and he was VERY skilled inidentifying the singers thereon...!Steven C.
