Depends on the shelving! Virtually ALL the metal shelving available to-day
is totally incapable of holding my half-vast 78rpm archives; 78's weigh
about
.5 lbs each. If we assume that 78's are .1" thick (my guess) then a
foot-long
row of them is120 78's...or 60 lbs. of shellac. Given that modern metal
shelves are around 4 feet wide, then each shelf has to support 240 lbs. of
records...which, generally, they CAN'T! Over 12 years ago, I owned one
set of industrial-grade steel shelving (bought when a large Toronto
department
store was closed and emptied). These were SERIOUS shelves; in fact, I have
never seen any similar ones being sold! I lost these when some EX-friends
decided to hold an impromptu "contents sale" of my Toronto home; some
lucky <deleted> bought not only the shelves, but the 500-odd LP's stored
on them...for just over $100.00...?! FEH!!
