While attending a concert at Constitution Hall many years ago, one of 
the presenters told a joke. Mel Lewis had just died and gone to heaven. 
He was welcomed at the Pearly Gates and told he would be joining other 
stellar drummers, such as Gene Krupa, Jo Jones, Chick Webb, etc. As the 
Gate Keeper was rattling off names, Mel interrupted and said: “I hear 
somebody playing drums off in the distance. It sounds like Buddy Rich.” 
“No,” said the Gate Keeper,” “it’s God who thinks he’s Buddy Rich.”
