I do the same thing  but about twenty five years ago I used to buy Pickering styli/cartridge combinations and it was cheaper for me to buy the new V15 because I could get them for $9.95 at the time.

I replace a stylus only when I can see or hear that it's gone kaputski. No 
gradual wear in my experience..more often the cantilever is bent or the tip has 
fallen off.
