They wouldn't pay The Mamas & the Papas, they would pay John Phillips, who wrote the song for Scott McKenzie. The Mamas & the Papas never
recorded "San Francisco."

As it has in many jazz records. I, too, would like to know how the
labels dealt with this. Did Led Zeppelin pay the Mamas and the Papas
for "Are You Going to S. F.?" That was clearly a cover, medleyed
into their set. But the flute part in, "Down Under," was less than
a sample (stem) within a mix.
