Good question.  I do not know why the French name "Pierre" is pronounced 
"peer."  Probably the early pioneers had no knowledge of French.

Another strange pronunciation is of the Nebraska town, Beatrice.  The 
natives pronounce it "Bee-a-triss.  We have a town in South Dakota spelled 
Groton.  We pronounce it "Grow-tun" and easterners pronounce their town 
"Grah-tun."  Local usage or something!
