I forget the details...but the name "Athol" is connected to the UK royal 
family
of Victoria's time. Most Canadian towns, including Oshawa, founded in the
19th century have an Athol Street/Avenue/wotever. Likewise, same for
"Brock," since General Brock went and got himself killed rather 
spectacularly
in the war of 1812!
