There's also Cleanhead Vinson (don't know if you consider him a poor man's LJ too),
Tab Smith and Buster Smith. I'd call Vinson voice-like or vocal, Tab S. melodic and Buster S. lyrical, if I understand your categories correctly.
There's Bobby Smith with Erskine Hawkins too. IIR, Albert 'Budd' Johnson was playing alto and tenor while with Hines in the '30s-'40s - a relatively uncelebrated guy who traces all through the 20th century music of his time.

Bop or not, Frank Morgan, Parker, Pepper, Shank all came to professional
age and the studio when 78s were the norm. As for earlier altos, what
about Buster Bennett and Hilton Jefferson? Don Stovall sonded good with
Pete Johnson too.

I believe I mentioned Jefferson. Bennett doesn't do a lot for me,
sounding like a poor man's Louis Jordan, who was fairly minor as an alto
player.
Again, I'm more interested in slotting them into particular styles.
Stovall I would describe as "craggy".
