It was primarily intended as a pre-bop list, although I didn't specify
it, with various styles noted. It wasn't meant as a list of the best or
favourite players as such.

After Bird, it becomes a mainly a list of altoists who didn't sound like
him, including Paul Desmond and Lee Konitz. There is another group from
this period who you could describe as "bluesy be-bop" such as
Cannonball Adderley and Lou Donaldson, who usually aren't very good
(too many quotes) and Jerome Richardson, who is, and who is usually
overlooked in this respect--try his work with the Prestige Blues
Swingers. George Coleman was also pretty decent in this style. Ernie
Henry and Jackie McLean continued the "craggy" tradition. The ultimate
in "cragginess" is of course, Marshall Allen, who played with Sun Ra for
many years, and is currently leading the Sun Ra Arkestra, at the age of
85. He's still playing with boundless energy although his dexterity is
not what it was.
