Once again...that depends! Edison machines (both cylinder and disc)
used a "feedscrew" to move the tone arm/reproducer along the record.
OTOH, virtually ALL disc players depended on the groove's spiral
path to move the reproducer inwards! The latter had become the
standard approach by the time microgroove phonorecords started
to appear...?!
