I believe the term "equalization" was initially used to signify the bias EQ applied to compensate for the treble rolloff as the groove spiral advanced toward the center of a 78 RPM lateral record. I recall reading a 1940's Columbia press release which touted its 16-inch lacquers as being recorded "without equalization." 

"Pitch" on early recording sheets referred to the tightness of the groove spiral which was usually preset according to the loudness of the program material and the length of the selection.

Terminology evolves. You bet your acetate!
