Well, I'm not certain if I'd run a 25 cycle one on 60 cycles or not, but
that's just me, I don't know enough about them to dare. The good news is,
the induction motors which should be all they ever came with, I believe, at
least the Victor Data Book makes no mention of Universal motors being
available for this one, are very easy to find. I have at least 4 spares in
my basement I keep for parts since I have three Victors that have them,
I've had to replace a open coil on one in ten years, but it pays to keep
the parts on hand.
If you can find a good radio guy in Toronto (there must be someone?) that
can recap the radio and check all the tubes and advise on the 25 cycle vs.
60 cycle issue, these sets are known for being relatively easy to get and
keep running. Oh, and you'll need to have the rubber replaced in the horse
shoe pickup, there's West-tech in Canada someplace that rebuilds these.
They sound damned good rebuilt.
Sean

Does your RE 45 have the induction disc motor like Radiola Guy's has? If
so, I don't think it would come to harm running it on 60 Hz, as opposed to
if it has the 'universal' motor some other electric Victors employed. I'd
think the induction disc motor by way of its design the only one that could
be run on any frequency above 25 and be OK. (The ones intended for higher
frequencies would have smaller coils, etc.)
I have one of the induction disc motors too; it was specified for 40-60
cycle operation and it's never given me trouble.
My dad's hometown, Keokuk, Iowa, was 25 cycle until 1948. I well remember
the times I'd stay at my grandparents' house during the summers when I was
growing up (I'm 45 now....this was between the late 1960s and the
mid-1970s), and seeing some radios they had that had '25 CYCLE' stamped on
the chasses. They'd had them since the 1930s and still played one of them
on occasion, and I remember it always working. They'd explained about this
and when everything else they had that was motorised had to have the motors
replaced (if they didn't see fit to replace the motorised items outright
with new ones).
