[Cary Ginell]

Great character actor. He was Corporal Henshaw on Sgt. Bilko, Charley Hacker on Gomer Pyle, Barney Hefner on All in the Family, Sam the Butcher on The Brady Bunch, Sol Pomeroy on The Dick Van Dyke Show, and made a ton of appearances on the Andy Griffith Show, usually as some shifty lawbreaker who would tower over Don Knotts and make him quiver like a bowl of Jello. I used to see Melvin around the Encino/Tarzana area when I was growing up, buying his own groceries at the supermarket. Harold J. Stone and Howard Caine - Major Hochstetter from Hogan's Heroes were also around often. Caine, a Jew, was also a bluegrass fan and used to listen to my country radio program and call in requests. I used to see him at Trader Joe's frequently. Nice guy, for a Gestapo stormtrooper.

 

One of my great memories was going to the grocery store with my mother when I was about 8 years old. "Lost in Space" was a big hit at that time, and shopping in the produce section was Jonathan Harris, the blustery coward, Dr. Smith. I was staring and staring at him and he finally turned to me and said in that menacing voice of his: "Go awaaaaaay." I ran, crying to my mother. I'll bet Harris got a kick out of that.
