I have the same experience when I'm watching a film on TV, and there's a
band playing (often distantly) in the background. I listen hard to
identify the tune being played and identify it to my partner.
Two or three years ago I phoned up my ISP (Virgin Media) at about
10.00pm, to be met with, not the usual "Four Seasons", but some genuine
jazz, like Armstrong's Hot Five and Red Nichols. I can't remember what
the problem was that I phone up about, but was annoyed at having to do
it at the time of night, but the anger dissipated when I heard the Fud
Livingston's stomping tenor playing.
Presumably, someone on night shift had brought along their own music.
