I think that Wynton Marsalis started this Lew-iss thing in order to defray the prevailing notion that Armstrong was merely a minstrel entertainer employed to serve whites. In other words, "Louie" was his slave name. "Louis" was more respectable. I don't think Armstrong gave a whit either way.
