Thanks to this reminder, I went to the site and ordered the set, for a net
price of $29.96. While I was there, I put a couple of other items into my
shopping cart that relate to my interest in pre-swing era music and
performers: "It's a Great Life" with the Duncan Sisters, and "Hollywood
Revue of 1929," which contains the first performance of "Singing in the
Rain," as performed by Cliff Edwards (and the entire company.) Net price
after discount of $15.96 each.
I also recently acquired (elsewhere) "The Broadway Melody", the 1929 Best
Picture which contains performances of the Freed-Brown song of that name, as
well as "The Wedding of the Painted Doll", "The Boy Friend," and of course,
"You Were Meant for Me."
The bonus features on that DVD include FIVE "Metro Movietone Revues" and a
couple of other shorts that include three songs by Van and Schenck ("If You
Want to Miss Heaven on Earth, Stay Out of the South", "Chinese Firecracker"
and "Way Down South in Heaven"), two performances by Johnny Marvin ("I Still
Love You" and "If You Don't Love Me") one by the Happiness Boys ("Jump,
Fritz, I Feed You Liver") as well as several other contemporary
vaudevillians, including Ginger Rogers' first husband Jack Pepper.
The "Broadway Melody" disc is currently available at Big Lots for $3... I
snapped a bunch of them up.

Sorry for a second posting on this but Warners put the set on sale this week
with double discounts. It's 25% off the $49.95 price and it you use a coupon
code it's another 20% off! and FREE shipping. That's $29.65 (approx.) for
the SIX DVD set with 11 hours of Vitaphones or about 50 cents per 10 minute
RARE Vitaphone short.
