Perhaps it is a statement of artistic value on Rust's part.I like Skin Young vocals on pop tunes, but I take this one as affront to Robeson. In this context it is awful. I love Crosby, but abhor his version w/ Whiteman and wondered why Young didn't do that one. Bing on the flip, however, "Make Believe" is about as good as he got in 1928.

Surprised that there's no mention of Austin Young's delicate, articulated
vocals (supplying the "bridge" on Paul Robeson & Paul Whiteman's March 1st
1928 recording of "Ol' Man River") on original issue (at least not on the
HMV C-1505) or later reissues.
Rust's "American Dance Bands" (1975 edition) doesn't mention Young either,
not even in the line-up.
What about the new edition?
