[78-L] BISHOP PRESSING

Jump was a Los Angeles label, but I find it interesting that Session (a Chicago label) used Bishop also. I had thought they were strictly local, but as it turns out, they apparently specialized in traditional jazz and/or reissue labels. The Crescents were not reissues, but new recordings made by Ory in 1944 and 1945. I did not find that Bishop did any Jazz Man pressings. The Bishop pressings on Crescent were somewhat noisy and heavy, much like the 1942 Jazz Man pressings, which were done by Allied.

The Bishop stamp is found on pressings on the Crescent label, which produced 8 issues by Kid Ory for the Jazz Man Record Shop. The Bishop Presses were located on 810 Rollin St. in South Pasadena and were hired by Nesuhi Ertegun, to press the Crescent 78s. Bishop’s advertising promised “high quality phonograph records” and boasted of being “caterers to collectors’ jazz labels.”
