[78-L] Soupy stories

Saw this one on the Internet:

 

Soupie was banned from TV for an ad lib comment: he said ” My girlfriend can’t cook, but boy can she make my banana cream.” It was hilarious — had me rolling on the floor. Great sense of humor, wonderful man, he’ll be missed! 

 

It seems that nobody who watched Soupy Sales recognized his connection to jazz. Since Soupy didn't come to L.A. until 1961, I was totally unaware of his Detroit years, which appeared to be more freewheeling, but it seems that from the comments on the Internet, almost nobody was aware of his jazz connections, including his using "Yardbird Suite" as his theme song for some time. I recall nothing jazz-oriented from his L.A. years, and certainly not the banana joke!
